Non-Destructive Testing Services for Michigan Manufacturers

American Metal Testing provides accredited non-destructive testing (NDT) for metal components across Michigan. Located in La Porte, Indiana, we serve industrial companies and manufacturers based in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit, and beyond. We also serve manufacturers in Indiana and Illinois. Whether your parts are headed for the automotive industry, defense applications, or general industrial use, our certified testing processes verify component quality.

NDT Inspection Methods Used to Test Metal Components

Different metal materials and components require specific testing methods. At AMT, we offer three primary non-destructive testing processes: Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection, Magnetic Particle Inspection, and Radiographic Inspection. Between these three methods, we can meet the testing requirements of nearly any NDT application for industrial applications across Michigan:

  • Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI): Fluorescent penetrant inspection detects surface flaws in nonferrous metals (aluminum, magnesium, titanium). FPI involves submerging parts in a fluorescent dye and inspecting them under ultraviolet light.
  • Radiographic Inspection (X-Ray Testing): Radiographic inspection uses X-rays to image a component's internal structure. This process can reveal voids, inclusions, cracks, and other subsurface issues that can't be identified by other methods.
  • Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI): Magnetic particle inspection is used for ferromagnetic metals, and works by inducing a magnetic field and applying magnetic particles to reveal defects.

NADCAP-Accredited Testing for Industrial Sectors in Detroit, Grand Rapids, & Beyond

Our NDT services are accredited by NADCAP, and are available to Michigan customers with parts that require inspection to industry standards such as ASTM, AMS, ASME, SAE, ANSI, AWS, and military specifications (MIL). If your drawing already specifies an inspection method and standard, we work to that requirement.

Industries we serve include:

  • Transportation and Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Military and Defense
  • Wind Energy
  • Safety and Rescue Equipment

Beyond these industries, our accredited processes benefit any application where component failure carries significant risk, whether that means production downtime, equipment damage, or safety.
