NDT Services for Transportation

Transportation is a broad industry that is involved in virtually every other sector. Malfunctioning transportation parts can have catastrophic consequences for the equipment's operators, bystanders, and more. Non-destructive testing (NDT) provides a reliable metal inspection process for transportation components. Fluorescent liquid penetrant, radiographic film, and magnetic particle NDT testing methods are used to inspect brake pads, crankshafts, and other transportation equipment, identifying imperfections that visual inspections would not detect.

Transportation NDT Solutions from American Metal Testing

American Metal Testing is your full-service, NADCAP-certified partner for high-quality, precise non-destructive testing. We work closely with you to ensure your product meets your unique standards. From single samples to high-volume testing applications, we can meet any required standard for critical transportation components, ensuring safe and efficient operations. Benefits of our advanced NDT solutions include:

  • NDT improves safety by identifying defects, cracks, and other structural imperfections without causing damage
  • Regular NDT inspections help avoid costly breakdowns and maintenance by identifying flaws early
  • NDT inspections keep vehicles and transportation components adherent to safety regulations
  • Regular NDT inspections help extend the operational life of transportation components

Metal NDT Inspection Services For Public Transit, Railway, Automotive, & More

Trains, cars, trucks, airplanes, public transit systems, and more are all involved in the transportation industry. We test machine partsmetal castings, and other components required to be free of cracks, flaws, or imperfections. American Metal Testing always strives for quality in everything we do. After any NDT process, we will clean your parts of any remaining residue and return them to you for further processing. Transportation components and systems we test include:

  • Railway systems
  • Maritime vessels & components
  • Automotive vehicles
  • Oil & gas pipeline systems
  • Mass transit systems
  • Weld inspections

Magnetic Particle Testing

Magnetic particle testing is well-suited to locating fine cracks or other damage in transportation components made from ferromagnetic materials, including engine parts that undergo high stress during operations. An electric current induces a magnetic field in and around the component. A magnetic flux leakage will disrupt the field and draw fluorescent magnetic iron particles to any present discontinuities. We evaluate your part based on your specifications and present our findings when the testing is completed.

Radiographic Film Testing

Sometimes called volumetric inspection, radiographic film testing uses X-rays to pass through a cross-section of your transportation component. This method reveals internal flaws in your part and can be applied to both metal and non-metal materials used in transportation applications. The resulting radiographic films reveal any damage, flaws, or discontinuities in the component. We examine our findings and communicate the results of the NDT to you.

Fluorescent Liquid Penetrant Testing

Fluorescent liquid penetrant testing is a versatile NDT inspection process designed to find flaws in non-porous transportation equipment that cannot be identified during visual inspections. After the part is cleaned, a level 3 high-sensitivity liquid penetrant is applied to the component, and the liquid is drawn into any cracks or imperfections through capillary action. Once the transportation component has been washed, dried, and developed, surface flaws are easily found and addressed.
